LED tv’s use the same technology as LCD tv’s.  The diffierence is in the lighting.  LCD tv’s use fluoresent lighting while LED tv’s use LED’s.  Thus this name indicates the type of lighting used in the tv and isn’t a new technology in itself.

3D LED TV’s have a higher contrast ratio than their LCD brethren and can create richer colors.  Of course this improvement comes at a slightly higher price.  Most likely all 3D LCD TV’s will become 3D LED TV’s but for now buyers have an option between the two.

One other thing to note is that there are two types of LED tv’s.  One is called side lit or edge lit LED’s.  These televisions are lit around the edge, requiring less overall lighting.  This allows these tv’s to be extremely thin.  The other option is backlit LED’s.  These have LED’s that are behind the image.  Sections of lights can be turned on or off which creates a higher contrast ratio.  The choice is up to you when purchasing a 3D LED TV.
